Plan for the Best. Prepare for the Worst.
When it comes to sailing, yachting or any form of boating, the sense of anticipation is special. There’s so much to look forward to when it comes to putting our boats in the water and setting a course for the afternoon, the day or the weekend.
It’s natural to plan for the best: Good weather. Good marine conditions. Good times.
Yet planning for the best leaves us only half-prepared. We need to be prepared for the worst.
Just think of those who had their boats moored at marinas and docks along the eastern seaboard of the United States last month. From Florida all the way up the coast to Maine, Hurricane Edna wreaked havoc.
The consolation was that Edna gave plenty of warning for those in the heaviest-populated areas of New York and north.
Our HUB International colleagues in New England made the most of that warning for their clients who either lived in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Maine or were visiting on late summer excursions along the Atlantic coastline.
We used web-based tools. Quick electronic communication to over 40,000 home, auto and marine customers in New England allowed us to get emergency services and advice to our customers even before the event happened. It also allowed us to evaluate the hardest-hit areas and deploy resources to best help our clients during that time of urgency and emergency.
That’s why we hope you’ll make our new web site and this blog a go-to resource for you when you’re planning for the best and making sure you’re prepared for the worst. You’ll get special alerts and helpful tips on a timely basis; all of the relevant information relating to your needs as a boat owner, including tide tables and weather reports.
Most of the time, we hope it works for you on those sunny days when special events and special offers are on tap. More than anything, we hope it helps to protect you when the weather takes a turn for the worst, like it did for our friends in New England when Edna decided to stir things up.
In the meantime, happy boating!
