Ensuring the right solution
Many of you know that the Federal Marine Liability Act governs liability for all marine vessels operating in Canada. Yet even experienced boaters are unlikely to fully understand the implications of the legislation, even for their own circumstances.
The Federal Marine Liability Act stipulates that for pleasure craft vessels of under 300 feet, intended strictly for private use, the limit of liability for a boat owner/operator for property damage is $500,000 plus interest, per occurrence. The limit of liability for personal injury or death, meanwhile, is $1,000,000.00 plus interest, per occurrence. In most cases, especially those involving pleasure craft owners and operators, the Federal Marine Liability Act would apply.
That means your need to pay for larger amounts of liability may not be necessary.
