Marine Safety Concerns Arise With News of Vancouver Coast Guard Station Closure
The federal government revealed its surprising decision on Thursday, May 17th to close the Kitsilano Coast Guard lifeboat station. Many have spoken out against the decision, expressing concerns over the safety of thousands of float plane and cruise ship passengers and the highly active boating community that use Canada's busiest port. The union representing the station's workers have launched a campaign protesting the closure with the support of Vancouver city councillors and Mayor Gregor Robertson.
According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Sea Island coast guard station in Richmond will be responding to calls from the harbour once the Kitsilano station closes. While this decision would save $800,000 a year, those opposed to the closure call attention to the risks of lengthy response times and overburdening the Sea Island station. The Kitsilano coast guard station currently responds to 300 calls a year with 55 lives saved so far in 2012.
The announcement comes just days before North American Safe Boating Awareness Week.
